A few days later, Riley smiled as she tucked the twins in for their naps. They’d had a busy morning of playing at the park around the corner, and they both seemed to be needing a bit of a rest.

“Sweet dreams,” she whispered and closed their bedroom door. For a moment, she leaned quietly against the wall in the hallway, relishing the peace she felt. Since she and Gui had taken their relationship to the next level, it felt like everything had fallen into place. She found herself to be more relaxed than she’d been in a long time.

Surely, the consistent hot sex didn’t hurt as she and Gui found it hard to keep their hands off of each other. There was a magnetism between them that neither one of them seemed to be able to resist. They’d spend fifteen minutes at work on the case and end up in bed together for an hour. They always found their way back to the work though. They were making good progress. Both in and out of the bedroom.

Riley’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She smiled when she saw it was Gui. He must have read her thoughts. She headed into the living room to answer it.

“Hey,” she said.

“How’s it going this morning?”

“Pretty good. I took the kids to the park. Would have been better with you.” She’d grown used to having Gui around. They’d spent the last several days together working, taking breaks with the twins, taking breaks for sex while the twins napped, and working some more.

“I wish I could be there,” he said. “I have to put some hours in on this other case. The hearing is coming up.”

“I understand.” She knew they couldn’t spend every minute together, although the thought was tempting. She loved how seamlessly Gui fit into their lives. “I actually have two articles to finish and send off today, so I’m going to be at my desk trying to get those wrapped up while the twins nap.”

“I’ll be over after work if that’s okay.”

“Can’t wait.”

She settled into her workspace, grateful to have something to look forward to. In a few hours, Gui would be here. They’d have dinner with the twins and spend the evening together. So simple, and yet perfect.

An hour later, the twins were still sleeping, and she had finished up and submitted both articles to separate publications. She’d emailed invoices to their payroll department, but one of the clients liked to receive a follow up print invoice by mail, so she headed down to stick it in the mailbox for the carrier to take. At the row of metal compartments, she noticed a plain white envelope taped to her box number. It was completely unmarked, no name other than hers and no return address.

Strange.

She dropped the invoice into the outgoing mailbox and ripped open the envelope. As she began reading the letter, goosebumps rose on the back of her neck.
